What is ESG?
ESG stands for Environmental, Social, and Governance. It represents a set of factors that complement financials as a way to measure a company’s overall performance. It leads management to use a new set of decision criteria that considers sustainability related risks and opportunities, in order to increase their companies’ resilience, gain a competitive edge, and maximize their positive environmental and social impacts in addition to financial returns (aka “triple bottom line”).
Environmental topics cover, among others: Climate change & greenhouse gases, energy, water & waste management, biodiversity impact.
Social topics cover, among others: Employee Health & Safety (EHS), Diversity-Equity-Inclusion (DEI), talent attraction & retention, community involvement, data security & privacy.
Governance topics cover, among others: Compliance, board structure, code of ethics, business model resilience & risk management, management compensation, share of revenue from sustainable products & services.
Different companies in different industries have different sets of material (most important) topics. This means companies must first assess which topics need to be prioritized to improve their ESG performance and generate the most triple bottom line results.
